With an ever decreasing religious world population, is it time our religious books had an updated version? The Bible 2.0 you can download to your new Iphone….. Minus the scare mongering threats of hell and eternal damnation? Is it time we combined our best lessons from life for everyone and combine all the teachings? Not based on one god, just best practices.

Only 60% of the world’s population is religious according to New scientist 2014. Just two years before the Times advised it was 83% of the world.

People have every reason to not truly believe anymore an increase in; Education, wealth, health and a decrease in religious credibility by Science and events in the world.

In this modern age wouldn’t it be better to put our differences aside and just give people some good honest advice.

The commandments are not a bad place to start however they are a little out dated and don’t take into consideration other peoples beliefs. So here’s my inital thoughts on them so far…..

  1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me- Well this doesn’t work for everyone why not remove this one god for a non-superior, no judging object to ease the tension.
  2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth- No Idols?! What? Who do I look up to?
  3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain-Oh god I think I did it again, oops…. hell for me.
  4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy- Can anyone truly say you do nothing, nothing at all on a Sunday! We live in a world where things just don’t stop for Sundays.
  5. Honour thy father and thy mother: This is good advice I can see why this was suggested.
  6. Thou shalt not kill- Keep this!
  7. Thou shalt not commit adultery- This is far to intrusive, and extreme. Here we should be telling our children the health risks not DON’T do it because I say. Let people make their own minds up.
  8. Thou shalt not steal- Keep this but also reverse it with don’t let people steal from you!(Jobs, Lovers, ‘friends’)
  9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour-Keep this.
  10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s- Very difficult in practice, it is part of some to want more and have more and without these people in society we would have no corporations or Lamborghinis. This needs a revamp!

So why did people need this super being to believe in?

  • Cope with death
  • Create a community
  • Comfort that things will be ok, and in the hands of someone else?

Why can we not have an updated version where we teach people to cope with all the things that life does throw at us? Create a community out of things that are real and tangible and take accountability of our own lives and futures?

What do you guys think? And what would you add to the commandments? I will add one to start

1.Thou Shalt not tax evade 😉 Look forward to hearing your thoughts!
